COMPUTER SECURITY BASICS- FOR WINDOWS 7 USERS

The following Computer Security tips are for Windows 7 users.

The most important role in the Computer Security is of Antivirus software.Make sure your computer is installed with the best Antivirus software( Avast 6.0 /Kaspersky/ Mc Afee recommended).
Antivirus must be updated atleast once in a week.
Updated Antivirus helps to detect Virus threats and protect your computer against infiltration by remote computers.
Scan your computer in Full Scan mode every month to ensure the safety of your computer against viruses or potentially unwanted programs.

Next step in enhancing the security of your computer is to turn on the Firewall. The Firewall is an inbuilt software on Windows OS that provides a line of defence against the people/ viruses that try to connect to your computer with your consent.
Make sure the Firewall of your pc is On, you can turn it on by :
Go to Control Panel > click on category view on left corner of screen.
Then click System & Security >Windows Firewall > check whether its off and turn it on.

Next I’d like to focus on the final step about computer security,ie. Windows Updates. The Windows Auto Updates are patches and updates developed by Microsoft for their Windows XP,Vista,7.
Turn on the Windows Automatic Updates from Security Centre.
To go to Windows Auto Updates :
Go to Control Panel > System & Security Centre > Windows Updates
Turn on the Auto Updates and set the time according to when your Pc is being used.
Make sure you have a good internet connection for these and a some free usage internet plan.

Since youv’e turned on the Automatic Updates it will take time for pc to shut down(when you manually shut it down or restart) but don’t worry its normal and pc will automatically shut down after installing the updates.

Before concluding with this post about computer security I’d like to tell you a short and easy way to hide your files and folders. When you create a folder it has some attributes Read only, hidden etc. Right click on that folder and select the hidden option then click Apply, it will ask you whether you want to apply hidden attribute for the files or just the folder.
Select just the folder and click Ok.

Your folder is now invisible, but don’t panic its not lost.
You can see it by clicking on Organize menu on the top of screen then select Folder Options and go to View menu then click Show Hidden Files & folders.
Click Ok and now you can see the folder you had hidden. To hide it again go back to Organize > Folder Options > View > Click Don’t show hidden files & folders.

Well, that was all about Computer Security.Hope you’ve found it helpful.
